Local Charities Join Forces

Two local charities have joined forces to secure the continued use of the old Benwell library building for the use of the local communities of Benwell and Elswick.

As the Benwell library service has moved to new premises, it has created an opportunity to ensure that community facilities are maintained, in a building that is much loved by the local community.   As Dolphin Street Community Centre is getting past its sell by date, it has been decided to close it down, and groups can move their activities into the old library building.

The building will be renamed ‘The Carnegie Building’, and will also house Riverside Community Health Project.  Additionally it will be available for use by other community organisations.

Riverside Community Health Project Management Committee will be strengthened by additional members from Dolphin Street Committee, and they will work together to develop and manage the building.

A big celebration is planned in September 2009 to celebrate and recognise the achievements of Dolphin Street over the years, and the opening of the new Carnegie Building.
